Owner + GuideCason Short

Born in Memphis and raised in Hunter, Arkansas, Cason grew up on the land he guides on today. His grandfather, Bill Byers, founded the club in 1953, and later passed it on to his son-in-law, Charlie Short – Cason’s father.

For Cason, running a hunt club and maintaining its diverse wildlife habitat are truly his legacy. Cason guided his first solo group at the age of 14 and started running the camp X years later. For him, duck camp is a social experience – a way to bring people together and share something that has profoundly shaped his life.

Cason lives in Hunter, Arkansas, with his wife and four children. Outside of work, you’ll find him supporting his kids’ interests in sports, as well as hunting and fishing. A true conservationist, Cason carries on the family tradition – maintaining habitat and making sure the next generation gets to experience the same love for the hunt that he’s always known.

GuideKyle Massey

Born and raised in the heart of Mississippi, Kyle started duck hunting at just 12 years of age – and has spent every moment since then learning the art of decoying and calling ducks. Eventually, Kyle turned that passion into a profession, starting to guide hunters at Bill Byers Hunter Club in 2011.

For Kyle, there’s nothing quite like watching those new to duck hunting experience the time-honored tradition he grew up with. Whether young or old, first-timers or seasoned hunters, Kyle works hard to make sure every hunt is a memorable one.

When he’s not in the blind or in the field, Kyle enjoys woodworking as well as passing down his love for the outdoors to his son, Levi. He and his wife Stacie are proud to call Hunter, Arkansas, home – where life moves a little bit slower, so the opportunity to enjoy it feels a little bit longer.

GuideBrian Meredith

Born and raised in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Brian discovered his love for hunting at the age of 15 – after which he never stopped. Brian has been guiding since 2010 and joined the Bill Byers Hunter Club family in 2012.

While he’ dropped a duck or two in his life, Brian is best known for his role as the camp’s cook. From his famous scrambled eggs and fried chicken biscuits (a.k.a., The Rooster) to his pork chop and cheese grits, Brian’s handiwork in the kitchen makes duck camp at Bill Byers Hunt Club something truly special.

For Brian, being part of such a historic club is about more than just hunting – it’s about preserving Arkansas’s rich waterfowl heritage and building friendships that last a lifetime. When he’s not in the kitchen or the blind, he’s spending time with his daughter, Avery.

GuideJohn Brooks

The great outdoors isn’t just a place for John – it’s a way of life. Born in Memphis and raised in Southaven, Mississippi, John discovered his passion for duck hunting at the age of 14. That passion eventually turned into a career, becoming a dedicated waterfowl guide with Bill Byers Hunter Club back in 2014.

For John, the best part of guiding isn’t just the hunt itself – it’s the people. The camaraderie, shared stories, and friendships forged in the field make every season memorable. Whether it’s working mallards into the decoys or catching the fast-flying teal at first light, he loves every moment spent in the wetlands.

When he’s not in the blind, John enjoys fishing, boating, and spending time outdoors with his daughter and two sons. For him, it’s all about passing down the traditions of the hunt and making sure every day outside is one worth remembering.

GuideMaddox Brooks

For Maddox Brooks, duck hunting isn’t just a pastime – it’s in his blood. Born in Memphis and raised in Southaven, Mississippi, he was just two years old when he tagged along on his first hunt. By the time he was six, he was a regular at duck camp. And thanks to his father, John Brooks – a veteran guide at Bill Byers Hunter Club since 2014 – he’s been learning the ways of the blind ever since.

Now, after spending over a decade in the field, he’s proud to be part of the crew that helped shape him. Whether it’s swapping stories in the blind or introducing someone new to the sport, Maddox is always up for a good time in the field, carrying on the traditions that made him who he is today.

And when he’s not hunting, you’ll probably find him on the water, fishing and enjoying the great outdoors.

GuideChris Harrell

Chris grew up in Central Arkansas and has been hunting since he was a kid. He first joined his dad in the blind when he was six, and by the time he was nine, he was filling tags. His early love for the outdoors eventually led him to guiding professionally in 2010 – and he has been a proud member of the Bill Byers Hunter Club team since 2017.

Chris takes pride in providing his clients with world-class experiences, both in the blind and at the lodge. Whether it’s watching a first-time hunter fill a tag or swapping stories over a BBHC’s famous wood-fire grilled steak, he’s proud to be part of a tradition that keeps people coming back year after year.

And when he’s not guiding, you’ll likely find him in the woods hunting deer and turkey or on the water fishing for Crappie. For Chris, it’s all about time well spent outdoors, family and friends.
